On a very miserable Sunday morning 12 Sphinx AC juniors turned up to compete in the final league race of the season. Well done to all, especially Grace Smith, Jordan Welch and Freddie Smith who were running in their first race for the club. The club finished in 17th position on the day and 17th for the season. 21 Sphinx AC runners/family/friends ran this weekend, with no first-timers and 3 PBs. The unexpected overnight sleet made conditions tricky and the path near Leamington Road was flooded (again!). Junior Alfie Meade absolutely stormed around today, earning a well-deserved PB along with recent new members Mark Moran and Gemma Waite. 24 Sphinx AC runners/family/friends ran this weekend, with 2 first-timers and 3 PBs. This was another record-breaking attendance, with 389 participants. Being the third anniversary of Coventry ParkRun, there was a small awards ceremony prior to the race. Paul Slatford won the men’s points table outright – congratulations to him! In fact, Sphinx AC had two out of the top three men and two out of the top three women – a fantastic achievement.

Sixteen Sphinx AC runners took part in the fourth of this season’s five-mile races, with Quentin Henry and Laura Pibworth both winning cash prizes for taking 4th place in their respective categories. The conditions were clear and dry but pretty windy, making the back straight tough going. The temporary course is still in use – this adds a few twists, slopes and patches of rougher terrain, all of which negatively affect times.
Just one Sphinx AC runner ran this snow-covered, off-road run at Newbold Comyn. All other local events had been cancelled due to the widespread black ice. At around 2.5 miles, I broke a plate of ice covering a large puddle and my trailing leg got caught on the breaking ice, causing me to fall into the puddle and get covered head-to-toe in mud.
Ten Sphinx AC seniors (plus one supporter!) made the trip up the M6 to run in the Midlands Counties Athletics Association XC on Stafford Common. Conditions were predictably bad; the women had to run on a course trampled by the juniors and the men had to follow. The snow-covered common rapidly turned extremely muddy with each footstep, making it tough going over most sections of the course. Official results are here (PDF):
