Eight women and eighteen men made the short journey to Leamington Spa for the first event of this year’s Birmingham League/Midlands Women’s XC races. Conditions were dry and bright but the ground was soft and only got softer as the races progressed! The ditch and the hill were there, as always, as were the crowds baying for mud. Hamilton Ngan made his XC debut and promptly lost his shoes in the process!

15 Sphinx AC runners took part in the first of this year’s six races, with Ashley Miles and Kyza Derby winning prizes for their performances. This wasn’t made any easier by the conditions, which were blowy, to say the least! Within two minutes of starting, it started raining and the (infamous) wind down the back straight was quite tough to contend with.

Nonetheless, we still had good representation and a few PBs. Ashton Court (Bristol) Bernard Blundell represented Sphinx AC at this charming event, set in the stunning grounds of Ashton Court Mansion in Bristol. The course is a curious physical anomaly, being uphill ALL THE WAY*.
