Results for the Rugby 6 (EMGP), 11-May-2016

Mitch has provided the following report:

Ironically, the closest venue in the EMGP Series saw a much reduced Sphinx turn-out at the Rugby 6 last night, with only four of us making the short trip to Ashlawn Rugby Club. It poured down from about 7.00 p.m., but then, just as we were hauled into the road by Stuart ‘Traffic Cop’ Harris, the rain stopped and conditions, though muggy, were nigh-on perfect for the race.

Respectable times for the four of us (Jamie pulled up with a muscle spasm, but still managed to finish at pace) and Uncle Tom finished 3rd in his category. Must mention Tom’s vest, which was probably older than he was, from a long defunct running club, Rugby AC. That apart, not much to write home about.

Next race Friday 20th May Blisworth 5: meet at club at 5.50 p.m. https://www.woottonroadrunners.co.uk/index.php?page=fri5series

Results for the Hornton 6, 18-Jul-2015

With no local race on the Sunday, Jackie and I went, on Saturday evening, to the sleepy Cotswold village of Hornton, just north of Banbury, for our weekend running ‘fix’. And what a great decision too! First timers, both of us (on the recommendation of Tom Dable, Kenilworth Runners) and we shall definitely return next year. Cherwell Runners and Joggers annual race is part of the Oxon Road Race Grand Prix Series of races and comprised a scenic circular 6 mile route. The course started with two very tough (Weedonesque) hills in the first 2 miles, followed by a nice long downhill stretch, before it wound its way back up to the idyllic village of Horley, then continued on through the picturesque countryside with several ‘undulations’, before returning into the village of Hornton via a steep downhill final half-a-mile. Low key affair, with cakes at the end at the Sports Pavilion, and well-marshalled throughout with ‘our very own’ Stuart Harris as race referee making sure ”we all looked after one another”. The only disappointment – finishing just behind Mr Dable – but we’ll know what to expect next year!

Results for the EMGP Rugby 6, 13-May-2015

Sphinx AC had 11 runners at the second race of the EMGP Series – the Rugby 6. This course consisted of 1 mile steep downhill, 1 mile flatish, 1 mile steady climb, 1 mile flattish, 1 mile steady climb and 1 mile flattish.

The Men’s Vice-Captain is claiming a PB for the first mile, in a time of 6:26 and a PW for the rest of it! Rob and Wayne have now finally worked out that they were never going to win the Brinklow handicap the following day (or indeed any other handicap for that matter), so both went for it at Rugby, finishing 2nd and 3rd Sphinxees respectively behind our Latvian comrade, Mr Blakunovs, who finished in an excellent 9th position overall.

Congratulations to Jamie, who beat the dogged Mr Kevin (4th in age category) by 2 seconds in a sprint finish (the former obviously not trying hard enough for the first 5.98 miles) and to Uncle Tom who finished 3rd in his category.

Next race Friday 22nd at Blisworth http://mcs.open.ac.uk/mkac/emgpblisworth5.pdf
