4 Sphinx runners completed the 20 mile option, organised by Reading Roadrunners, starting and ending in Bramley, south of Reading.
Thanks to Lisa Abbott for the following report:
Last day of the Tempo Winter Series and the usual Sphinx lot were ready to run up ‘The’ Hill for the last time.
Course Pb for Allen and Lisa and a 2 second near miss from Vickie although she did us all proud beat Spyro in her walking shoes! What a way to bow out Vickie! Allen also notched up a very respectable 7 or 8th in the series overall (tbc)
Those who ran in all 5 races were not only rewarded with sausages but the series hoodie. A big thank you to Allen for allowing me to calm my inner diva and have his well earned hoodie. Drip of the day goes to Kevin who tried to return his new hoodie under the ‘Consumer rights act’
only to be informed that the hole in his pocket was in fact a purposely added headphone hole. We decided to put it down to an age thing. We then headed to the local pub for a reflection pint. Rumours were that Allen deliberately left his car window open on race route to avoid having to be part of the splits
and heart rate analyst club. I had at one point been torn between a new car or a Pb, as a true athlete I chose the latter.
A great series with great friends. Hopefully we will have even more of us there for the next series which starts again in October.
Lots to cover: Congratulations to Alex Bartlett on his 2nd place finish at South Oxhey, congratulations to Lore Paterson and Imran Ali on their PBs at Coventry, congratulations to Colin Piper on his PB and 5th place finish at Rugby, and congratulations to Vicky Brewin on being 2nd lady on her fist visit to Taupo. Also, Laura Pibworth-Dolinski and the Cozens were first timers at Rugby and Newbury respectively.
9 Sphinx ladies made the short trip to Warwick University for their final cross-country race of the league season. Well done to all those that have played a part during the season; the team finished in 23rd place in division 2.
Thanks to Mitch for the following report:
Four of us (Andy Mac, Eggman, Jax and me) made the 70 mile trip to the village of Caythorpe in Lincolnshire for an ‘off-road’ half-marathon over the ‘flat’ countryside. An awful day for running with temperatures around 2 degrees, constant drizzle and a bitterly cold easterly wind, from which there was very little protection as we crossed the open fields. The course itself had everything, tracks and trails through copses, ploughed muddy fields, stiles, kissing gates, a stretch right through a church graveyard and probably 3 miles or so on road. We also encountered possibly the only hill in the whole of Lincolnshire, from the top of which we could just about see the Eiffel Tower in the distance! We were encouraged to enter as a team at £10 a head, 2 males and 2 females, with the luscious Steve Colbourne passing as the second woman in our quartet! The entire event was organised by the villagers for the villagers with the locals providing the marshalls and preparing the food at the end with all proceeds going to Caythorpe itself . This was the ‘Winter Woodhouse Eaves’ with a veritable feast at the end – homemade soup (three choices), loads of sandwiches, and, for dessert, a choice of homemade apple pie or jam sponge, both with custard (with no limits, so a certain farmer took full advantage!) and free tea and coffee for all. Pity about the weather and conditions, but still an excellent event.
Thanks to Phil Wilson for the following report:
I was the sole Sphinx representative at this race. 30K = 18.6 miles. A very undulating road race in the countryside on quiet country lanes. A single lap.
The day was grey, cold and breezy, but the rain / sleet / snow held off. Not a day for frolicking with the girl / boy of your dreams outside.
A good pre marathon training event. Well organised and supported. Long sleeve shirt and goody bag.
Thanks to Wayne for the following report, and also for organising us so well over the season:
12 Sphinx made the trip back along the M42 to Droitwich ( different course to race 3 ) for the final league race of the season , the official Sphinx warm up was underway , i.e. Staying inside until the last possible moment before then giving it the full beans at the hooter ,with a sea of blue and gold leading the race through first 2 corners ,
With strong racing from everyone we managed to overtake the team ahead of us and finish in a brilliant 6th place out of 19 teams overall.
Well done and congratulations to Michael Gough in his first season as a senior , winning this season’s Sphinx cross country trophy .
A big thank you to everyone who represented the club throughout the whole season and making it a very enjoyable season
Congratulations to Alexander O’Brien on a PB at Coventry, and Louis Carver on completing his 50th parkrun.
Thanks to Catherine Gough for the following report:
A sunny but windy 4th February saw UK Universities race at the BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) Cross Country Championships in Graves Park Sheffield. It was an fun but tough 7.4k distance for the women’s race. Very hilly and muddy, featuring a hay bale jump and a short very steep part. Unlike some I stayed on my feet to finish 167 amongst the 619 runners!
