We now have a waiting list in operation - contact Craig Robinson to be added to the list.

Juniors

Sphinx AC has a thriving, award-winning Junior Section which meets every Monday at 7:00 pm at Lyng Hall School on Blackberry Lane in Wyken (CV2 3JS).

The minimum age, as stipulated by UK Athletics, is 8 years old. The juniors have exclusive use of the gym and the floodlit all-weather track facilities. There is ample room at the trackside for parents to spectate, which most do. The juniors are grouped by age/ability and each group is led by UKATHLETICS-qualified coaches who have all been CRB checked. There is an annual subscription of £20 to join the Club plus £1 for each track session. For non-members the track session costs £2.

Sphinx AC want to keep the juniors involved in athletics for as long as possible, so the emphasis is on enjoyment and - for the younger ones - on endurance-based games. We never force anyone to take part in a training session - or a race - that they don’t want to do. We really do want everyone to enjoy what they are doing. However, if a junior wants to be Olympic champion, then we will also do whatever we can to help that child to achieve that ambition!

We have juniors who are happy to meet socially for some physical exercise and we have juniors who have appeared in National Championships. Some of our juniors have gone on to represent Coventry in the International Childrens Games in countries from Hungary to America. We are members of the West Midlands Young Athletes Cross-Country League (http://www.wmyaccl.com/Fixtures.asp), which consists of 5 races between October and February.

During the warmer and (hopefully) less muddy months, some of the juniors take part in Quadkids events (see http://www.quadkids.org for further info). There’s lots that we could tell you but the best thing is to come on a Monday night - you’ll love it!
