Results for the Monks Kirby h/c, 11-Jun-2015

The third race in the series took place over the traditional course at Monks Kirby, with 49 runners taking part. Without the problems from last year when part of the course was closed by police the only slight concern was that for the first time we had no marshals out on the course to help the runners cross the busy road but thankfully everyone got round without incident. It’s also great to see many of our new members coming along to take part in the series with the result that a third of the field were running this course for the first time.

First over the line was Clare Taylor who crossed the line in 46:00 just over a minute ahead of Jon Dowds who followed up his 3rd place at Brinklow with run with another good run to finish second in 38:16. Jon took the prize for first place in the handicap race as Clare was running as a guest. In third place was Karen Winchester who completed the course in 50:41. The fastest run came from Andrejs Blakounovs who was taking part in his first handicap race, Andrejs finished in 27:22 with Pete Fahy (31:19) and Jamie Richards (31:26) making up the top three.

Looking back through the records to this race 20 years ago, the biggest difference is the number of runners. In 1995 there were a total of 29 taking part, this included 4 guests. The other noticeable difference however is the times although the quickest time of 27:44 compares well with the Andrejs’ time there were another 4 runners back in 1995 who completed the course in less than 30 minutes. Ben Orme finished in 29:10 which gave him 3rd over the line and 4th quickest time of the day. The other current members who took part in that are Bob Carey who crossed the line 4th in 31:47, 6th place went to Mick Petch in 34:38 and Paul Bergin was 9th in 29:51.

The next race in this year’s handicap series is on 16th July starting at 7:00pm on the old railway line at Birdingbury once again parking is limited so please share cars if possible.

Results for the Tysoe Windmill 10k, 06-Jun-2015

Laura Pibworth, Helen King, Monika Ciezarek and Pete Fahy completed this 10k Saturday morning race. Laura described it as: Starting in the picturesque Cotswold village of Tysoe, this race lulled us into a false sense of security with an easy first mile through the flat-ish village. The route then took us through a field and up a fairly steep climb to a windmill, from which you could see great views across the Warwickshire/Oxfordshire countryside as it was a clear day.

Results for the Pitsford Reservoir 10k, 07-Jun-2015

Jackie Stuart on her 10k race on Sunday: On Sunday 7th June I took part in a 10k race around Pitsford Reservoir near Northampton, finishing just over halfway through the field. It was a very warm morning but with a strong wind off one side of the water. The surface was a stony, trail path with views of the water for the majority of the run. Whilst not hilly, I wouldn’t call it flat either – let’s say undulating!

Results for the Banbury 5, 09-Jun-2015

An excellent turn-out of 11 Sphinx runners made the trip to Banbury for the 5th race of the EMGP Series.

Outstanding running by Andrejs saw him finish in 5th place with a 5-mile PB (27:46). PB’s also for Jamie (32:09), Dave (34:23), Mary (40:05) and Lisa (41:48). What an excellent move this has been by the club in appointing Mr Salazar as head coach during his sabbatical.

Best performance of the night goes to Lisa, however, who hammered Jamie in the race back to the car.

Bravest performance went to Andy Mc for taking the coldest shower of the Series so far… (Tom Dable informed us afterwards that the hot showers were just next door – a tremendous sporting gesture from one of our fellow club runners). Thanks to Andy Mc, Mr Bench and Rob for driving.

Next race Harborough 5 Tuesday 16th http://mcs.open.ac.uk/mkac/emgpharborough5.htm

Usual travel arrangements, 5.45 p.m at the club for car share.

Results for the Ramathon half-marathon, 07-Jun-2015

Big do this one! Almost 2800 finishers, but very well organised with road closures throughout and plentiful drinks stations. Start and finish at Derby County’s Pride Park Ground, hence the ‘Ramathon’. Very warm conditions, but flat as they come. Congratulations to the girls, Lisa and Laura, and also to Jamie who all got half-marathon pb’s, despite the heat. And good to see young Craig enjoying his running again. Finally thanks to ‘the old married couple’ for driving and navigating so well between them.
