Results for the Rugby 6 (EMGP), 11-May-2016

Mitch has provided the following report:

Ironically, the closest venue in the EMGP Series saw a much reduced Sphinx turn-out at the Rugby 6 last night, with only four of us making the short trip to Ashlawn Rugby Club. It poured down from about 7.00 p.m., but then, just as we were hauled into the road by Stuart ‘Traffic Cop’ Harris, the rain stopped and conditions, though muggy, were nigh-on perfect for the race.

Respectable times for the four of us (Jamie pulled up with a muscle spasm, but still managed to finish at pace) and Uncle Tom finished 3rd in his category. Must mention Tom’s vest, which was probably older than he was, from a long defunct running club, Rugby AC. That apart, not much to write home about.

Next race Friday 20th May Blisworth 5: meet at club at 5.50 p.m. https://www.woottonroadrunners.co.uk/index.php?page=fri5series

Results for the Silverstone 10k (EMGP), 04-May-2016

We have the following report from Mitch:

The first EMGP race of the 2016 Series took place at Silverstone on a glorious sunny evening, in stark contrast to last year where most of the runners had ‘wets’ on to negotiate the circuit. 10 Sphinx made the trip with debuts at the ‘Home of Racing’ for Lisa, Alex and Paul. Pride of place goes to Kev, who came 5th out of 40 in his age category in an outstanding 42:27 and also to Lisa, who goes from strength to strength, finishing 15th in the Female Seniors Category, out of 118 runners, in an excellent 46:59. Great to see Alex on his way back to full fitness too; fortunately the course last night was traffic free, which was a big help (sorry mate J, couldn’t resist that one).

PS – Also, just spotted, Allen also finished 15th in his category, out of 124, in a very creditable 40:09. Would have noticed it earlier but Allen still can’t spell ‘Spinx’ correctly!

Results for the EMGP MK10k & Series, 30-Jun-2015

8 Sphinx runners made the lengthy trip to Milton Keynes for the final, and least exciting, but definitely the hottest, race of the EMGP Series. Andrejs almost got lost (again!) but still finished 8th on the night; however his momentary hesitation deprived him of a sub 35 minute 10k PB. A PB however for Jamie who, despite a hip injury, finished in 41 mins 47 secs. Laura may well have got a PB too, but her secretary, Lisa, couldn’t instantly recall what her best time was for 10k!

With regard to the overall series itself, congratulations to Andrejs, who finished 3rd overall, having completed all 8 races (44.64113 miles), and only finishing outside of the top 10 in the Senior Men category on one aocasion (11th at Silverstone). He has already booked his coach ticket to Northampton to spend his £100 worth of running vouchers at their Running Shop. Get yourself a decent pair of running shoes my friend, you might go a bit quicker! Mr Consistency, our Rob, also completed all 8 races, finishing in an excellent 22nd place overall. Creditable EMGP debuts for Jamie (who also did all 8 races) finishing 33rd overall, and for Dave West, 46th overall. Pride of place for the ladies went to Mary – another 8 racer – who finished 7th overall in her category and only once outside the top 10. Finally thanks to all those who drove to the various events, and Gary for being our official photographer. Bring on the WRRL!

[edit by Rob] Mitch also completed all 8 races and finished in a fine 8th place overall in his category.

Results for the Weedon 10k, 23-Jun-2015

Firstly, from the Sphinx book of excuses for missing this event we have:

From Dave West, “I’m saving myself for Saturday”

From Laura Pibworth-Dolinski, “I’m moving house in 2 weeks and need to do some packing”

From Luke Makins, “I’m moving house in 2 weeks and need to do some packing”

Yes, the Weedon 10k is a toughie, but it is not a geographical paradox, so what goes up must come down and, although you will need crampons, a rope and an oxygen tank to get to the top, from 8 kms you just have to hope that your parachute (or your reserve) opens for the descent into the village.

In the race itself Andrejs again performed magnifiently, finishing 3rd overall with a 10k PB to boot!

Course debuts for Lisa, Laura, Mary and Andy Mc and we wish them all a speedy recovery.

Finally, next week (Tuesday 30th June) is the last EMGP race of the series and probably the least interesting (and furthest away) of all eight races in the competition. However, it would be great if we could get a good crowd of us there to support and congratulate Andrejs, who is destined to win a series award for his outstanding performances throughout. So, if you do fancy coming along, meet at the club at 5.30 p.m. (note earlier time) for car share.

Results for Harborough 5, 16-Jun-2015

Eight Sphinx runners took part in the 6th race of the EMGP Series at Market Harborough. More like ‘Marmite Harborough’ this one, as you either, like Jackie, love it, or, like Dave, hate it. Indeed Mr West didn’t stop moaning about the hills tonight, but don’t worry my friend, it’s Weedon next week and that’s as flat as they come, makes Silverstone look like Snowdon,10K PB guaranteed :).

In the race itself, pride of place has to go to Andrejs, who goes from strength to strength with back to back 5 mile PB’s. Last night he finished 3rd overall in a tremendous time of 27:41. And all this in a pair of £30 ‘Sports Direct’ trainers that are over a year old! At least he’ll be able to get a decent pair with all the running vouchers he’s won 🙂

Next race next Tuesday http://mcs.open.ac.uk/mkac/emgpweedon10k.htm Meet at club at 5.45 p.m., don’t forget your crampons!

Results for the Banbury 5, 09-Jun-2015

An excellent turn-out of 11 Sphinx runners made the trip to Banbury for the 5th race of the EMGP Series.

Outstanding running by Andrejs saw him finish in 5th place with a 5-mile PB (27:46). PB’s also for Jamie (32:09), Dave (34:23), Mary (40:05) and Lisa (41:48). What an excellent move this has been by the club in appointing Mr Salazar as head coach during his sabbatical.

Best performance of the night goes to Lisa, however, who hammered Jamie in the race back to the car.

Bravest performance went to Andy Mc for taking the coldest shower of the Series so far… (Tom Dable informed us afterwards that the hot showers were just next door – a tremendous sporting gesture from one of our fellow club runners). Thanks to Andy Mc, Mr Bench and Rob for driving.

Next race Harborough 5 Tuesday 16th http://mcs.open.ac.uk/mkac/emgpharborough5.htm
