What’s in a name? That which we call a marathon by any other name would feel as challenging. On the same day as London marathon, Collin Taylor and Jonathan Dowds completed the same feat through the Warwickshire countryside.
To run or not to run…not much of a question as the answer is always to run, and that’s exactly what 10 Sphinx runners did at Stratford.
Andy Wilkinson, Helen King, Pete Fahy and Ruth McCarroll all completed the 26.2 mile route around London. Lee Timms completed approximately half of the course before side effects of his brain tumour.

First race in the EMGP for 2016 http://mcs.open.ac.uk/mkac/The_EMGP.html Meet at Copsewood at 5.30 p.m., journey time is about an hour, then we need to register/pick up numbers, etc., so aim to arrive at Silverstone about 6.40 p.m. Race starts at 7.30 p.m. If you wish to meet at the club and car share, please let me know.
Well done to Lore Paterson and Ruth Hallett for achieving new PBs at Coventry. Elsewhere, Steve Osmond continued his parkrun tour by being a first-timer at Perry Hall, and Alex Bartlett continued his comeback by running Southampton parkrun for the first time.
7 Sphinx runners ran as guests in the first of Northbrook’s handicap series.
Dorota completed this 10k run and earned the women’s 2nd place trophy!
5 Sphinx runners completed the final run of the series. Overall, Lisa finished 10th and Mitch and Jackie both finished 2nd in their categories for the series. Both Nigel and Mitch completed all 6 races in the series.
Tony McCarroll, Mary Bench, Karen Timothy, Ian Ward and Hamilton Ngan completed this popular marathon, with Mary achieving a well-deserved PB.
Welcome to summer! The first handicap was held in glorious sunshine; just what Chris and I needed for our first experience of organising the handicap series.
I drove over from The Regency 10k in Leamington to find Chris and Fiona surrounded by people and the handicap ready to start. A total of 34 ran, which included 2 guests and 1 junior.
Our two guests, Vicky and then, Sophie, went off first, followed by everyone else. There was a difference of about 30 minutes between the first starters and the last, but for us, it went very quickly.
Everyone started; breathe a sigh of relief!! It was then that Chris and I realised that we were the only two on the finish line and started to panic about how we would record it all. But then, running up the hill towards us came Imran – our knight in shining armour. Phew, panic over.
Our guests crossed the line in first and second place. The first club runner back was Michael Gough, but as a junior was not eligible for the handicap trophy. The winner of the trophy was Steve Osmond who finished fourth.
In all, there were 11 first timers, and 9 p.bs. The result of the day was by Catherine Gough who took two minutes off the ladies course record. Well done.
Thanks to everyone who helped on the day, putting out the course, handing out numbers, marshalling and helping on the finish line. And thanks to everyone who ran.
