The last of the Thursday evening handicap races took place over the traditional 5.2 mile course with 37 runners taking part, including 4 guests. Alan Patrick showed he is back to the form he showed earlier in the year by crossing the line first in a time of 36:51, a minute ahead of the second placed runner, Emmet Torley (52:23). Third over the line was Manveer Sahota (37:24), one of 3 juniors who took part in the race. For the second race in succession Justin Smith took advantage of Ash’s absence and ran the quickest time of the night completing the course in 30:54, he was followed by Andy & Ian Wilkinson who finished in 31:38 & 32:11 respectively. Nearest to the estimated time was Darina Brejtrova who finished in 46:26 just 2 seconds quicker than her estimate.

The final 2 races in the Summer series are on Sunday 9th on the Greenway in Burton Green and at Grandborough on Sunday 16th both races starting at 11:00. The championships for both the Road Race trophy and the Handicap trophy are wide open after 4 races. The Road Race championship is the closest for many years with 2 points covering the top three places, held by Any and Ian Wilkinson on 391 points and Paul Slatford on 389 points. Pete Haughton is leading the way for the Handicap trophy but with the best 4 races to count for each both neither competition will be decided until after the race at Grandborough.

September is also a busy month for club handicap races with the Kenilworth half-marathon on 2nd and the Massey’s Corporate Challenge 5 on 11th providing the races for our half marathon and 5 mile handicaps. I hope to see as many of you as possible supporting these local events.
