Results for Birdingbury handicap, 18-Jul-2013

By Rob | July 30, 2013

In complete contrast to June’s race, the Birdingbury handicap was run in temperatures of 30 degrees which had more effect on some of the runners as can be seen from the finishing times. Even so 43 runners, including 1 guest, lined up to take part over one of the toughest courses in the series, with 17 experiencing the ups and downs of this demanding route for the first time. The heat and oppressive conditions didn’t prevent new PB’s being set by Dave Kelly, Adam Barnes, Kyza Derby, Wayne Broadbent, Sue Gough, Bryan Pears, Jane Edwards and Karen Timothy.

The race saw a welcome return to the handicap series for Garry Barnes who took part for the first time since 2010 and Anne Cartwright who hasn’t taken part in a handicap race for 5 years. The long break didn’t make any difference to Anne as she crossed the line 15 seconds ahead to win the race in 50:46, over 4 minutes quicker than her predicted time. 2nd to finish was new member, Rob Wheatley who completed the course in 34:01 with Dave Kelly in third place in 40:13.

The fastest time on the evening was from Kyza Derby in 31:39 followed by Andy Wilkinson and Quentin Henry in 31:48 and 31:57 respectively. There was also the very rare occurrence of a tie for nearest to estimated time with Will Robertson and Paul Slatford predicting their finishing times exactly.

The next race is at Corley and is the last of the Thursday evening races on August 15th starting at 7:00pm.
