Sphinx AC Races
Sphinx AC organise and promote a number of races throughout the year.
Sphinx AC Coombe 8
The Sphinx AC Coombe 8 is an annual multi-terrain race organised and promoted by Sphinx AC and hosted at Coombe Abbey Country Park. The inaugural event took place in November 2009 and was an immediate success proving popular with seasoned club runners, unattached runners and beginners alike with entries from across Coventry, Warwickshire, the Midlands and beyond.
Sunday 20 November 2011 is now the confirmed date for the 2011 Sphinx AC Coombe 8. Entry fees cover the now-famous long sleeve t-shirt and cup of hot soup!
Here's a review of the 2009 race http://www.sphinx.org.uk/pages/race-reviews/2009-coombe-8.php and some reviews from FETCH and the Runners World website;
"My first cross-country race and it didn’t disappoint. I’m only used to road running so the terrain was a bit tough for me but they did say that at the outset! No mile markers and no drinks en-route but otherwise a very nice atmosphere and impeccably organised and marshalled. Sphinx should be very proud of themselves. Nice T-Shirt at the end, water, hot soup."
"Cracking run today - thank you to all of the organisers and marshalls who were all superb - I shall most definitely be putting it on my calendar again for next year. great organisation and course, *VERY* much enjoyed t-shirt and hot soup were fab. Love the quote on the front ."
"Well Done Sphinx AC!!!! What a great run....my wife and I loved it in a sadistic kind of way. The hard work and prep in organising you all must have done really paid off, it was very, very well organised....I saw the water 1/2 way on the table, but I missed the jelly beans...my wife tells me there was someone with a bucket full! Had to get back to kids as soon as race was over, so missed results, but did get a lovely soup.....will they be available online??? I also noticed a few pro photographers....is there going to be a runners pics site or something?? Funniest thing I saw..... one guy came out of a dyke and left his trainer behind stuck in the mud!!! I shouldn’t laugh, but was glad it wasn’t me for a change.Thanks again, and thanks for the heads up on footwear Captain, I may have been faster in flippers. "
"Wow! Really enjoyed the run today. So much more fun running off road. Chasing sheep was defo a highlight. Lol! Thank you guys. Long sleeved tops superb."
Sphinx AC Summer 5
The Sphinx AC Summer 5 is an annual 5-mile race organised and promoted by Sphinx AC which is hosted in and around Coventry's War Memorial Park. Now in its third year, it has already earned its deserved reputation by offering a value-for-money event that boasts free parking, excellent organisation around a stretching - largely traffic free - course.
Finishing in the shade of a tree-lined downhill path, a banana, memento, drink and free cakes await all finishers. The event is well-supported by club athletes from all over Coventry, Warwickshire and the greater Midlands running community. Unattached runners and beginners are also assured of a warm welcome at Sphinx AC events - in 2011 we offered a discounted entry rate for unattached ParkRun runners.
Details of the Sphinx AC Summer 5, including links to results and photos from previous years, can be found on the Sphinx AC Summer 5 race page.
Sphinx AC club handicap series
The Sphinx AC club handicap series is a series of races in which participants earn points. At the end of the series, the overall winner is the runner with the most points.
The crucial difference between the handicap series and a normal race is that the overall winner doesn't necessarily have to win any of the individual races, as points are awarded for running in each race, matching predicted times and so on.
